Bio:

Bernd is a Learning Experience Designer and Facilitator based in France. He is the author of The Immersive Theatre of Learning, published in 2024.Thanks to Rachel’s online course, he also added NeuroHeart Education Coach to his skill set. Bernd comes from a language educator background, but now mainly works in the intercultural field, helping individuals and organisations adapt to new cultural environments, build diverse teams or reconciled hybrid cultures. In his work he uses elements of immersive theatre, improvisation, games and coaching to create learning environments in which cultural learning can take place.

Session synopsis:

Rituals for Learning

This workshop will explore the concept of rituals in learning, celebrating them as intentional, meaningful actions repeated over time to achieve transformative effects.

It will contrast the power of rituals with the instant gratification culture that increasingly shapes modern behaviours, and also with linear learning programmes often suggested in educational programmes or e-learning.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how rituals differ from habits and how to design and implement rituals to foster deep learning and engagement.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Define Rituals in Learning:

Introduce participants to the concept of rituals as intentional and symbolic actions that reinforce focus, commitment, and learning outcomes.

2. Distinguish Between Rituals and Habits:

Highlight key differences—habits being automatic and utilitarian, rituals being mindful and purpose-driven.

3. Examine the Impact of Instant Gratification:

Discuss how modern instant-access culture undermines the slow, deliberate processes essential for deep learning.

4. Develop Personalised Learning Rituals:

Guide participants in designing rituals tailored to their coaching or educational practices.

5. Celebrate Rituals as a Learning Anchor:

Demonstrate how rituals can anchor learners emotionally and cognitively, improving retention and engagement.
